Sea spinach, also known as “Sagarlata,” forms a fresh green pattern on the soft sands of the Cox’s Bazar beach.
Locally referred to as “Daunga,” this plant battles against the intensity of ocean tides and helps create new dunes along the coast.
While Sagarlata once dominated various parts of Cox’s Bazar beach, its presence has significantly diminished recently.
However, it is now returning to quieter beach areas in Teknaf.
Sagarlata plays a crucial role in preventing soil erosion on the beach and helps trap flying sand, forming giant dunes.
These dunes are a natural defense against storm surges caused by sea storms or earthquakes, making Sagarlata a protective shield for the coastline.
