Renowned regional singer Bulbul Akter has been honoured with the “Independence Commemorative Award” by Chattogram City Corporation in recognition of her outstanding contribution to local music.
The award was presented on Saturday afternoon on the gymnasium premises of Chattogram District Stadium during the closing ceremony of the “Independence Book Fair Chattogram–2026.” Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain attended the event as the chief guest.
In his speech, the mayor said the city corporation was proud to honour deserving individuals and institutions at the closing of the book fair.
He noted that recognising contributions to society, culture, education, and the Liberation War was an important initiative.
Expressing her reaction, Bulbul Akter said the recognition was a matter of great joy and honour for her.
She said she had never received such an award before and that it would inspire her to continue her work with greater dedication.
A total of eight individuals and three institutions were selected for this year’s awards. Among the recipients were late politician Abdullah Al Noman (posthumous), Md Ekramul Karim, Nur Ahmed Chairman (posthumous), M A Foyez, and Dr M Ramiz Uddin Chowdhury.
In addition, former national cricketer Akram Khan was recognised in sports, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in social service, Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital in healthcare, Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) in cultural activities, Abdul Mannan Rana in music, and Bulbul Akter for her contribution to regional songs.
Meanwhile, the Literature Award 2026 was presented to Dr Abdullah Al Mamun (lyrics), Syed Khaledul Anwar (children’s literature), Harun Rashid (essays and research), Shahid Hasan (poetry), and Jahed Motaleb (fiction).
Cultural activists believe Bulbul Akter’s recognition will inspire the local cultural community and encourage the preservation of regional music traditions.
