Six Bangladeshi fishermen, who were detained by Myanmar’s armed group Arakan Army, have safely returned home. Their release was secured through extensive efforts and mediation by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Saturday (March 29) at 12:20 PM.
Lieutenant Colonel Md confirmed the information: Faruk Hossain Khan, the commanding officer of the 34th BGB Battalion in Cox’s Bazar.
According to an official statement issued by BGB, the Arakan Army initially captured five fishermen on March 1 while they were fishing in the Naf River near Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. Later, on March 25, another fisherman was detained, and the group also seized two fishing boats.
BGB had been actively working for their release from the very beginning. After prolonged discussions, the 34th BGB Battalion secured its freedom on Saturday afternoon. Arrangements are now underway to reunite the fishermen with their families.
BGB has reiterated its commitment to ensuring border security and the protection of Bangladeshi citizens.
“BGB has always remained vigilant in safeguarding the lives and assets of our citizens. The safe return of the detained fishermen is a testament to our dedication,” said Lieutenant Colonel Faruk Hossain Khan.
Their families have expressed immense relief and gratitude upon their return, while locals have welcomed BGB’s proactive initiative in ensuring their safe repatriation.
