Nasrin Akter Mukta, 29, wife of Dhaka district Chhatra Dal vice-president Deowan Faisal, died in a devastating fire at Tuptup Resto and Resort in Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Saturday morning.
The fire broke out at around 7:00am at the resort near Patwartek beach along Marine Drive. Six deaths had been confirmed at the time of the initial report, although the toll later rose as rescue operations continued.
Mukta taught at Swapnabilash Niribili School in Ashulia. Her father’s name was Mostafa Kamal.
Her husband, Dewan Faisal, said Mukta and her friends had known one another since childhood and had studied together. They went to Cox’s Bazar on Thursday and were scheduled to return on Sunday.
“They had gone there together for a trip, but she will never return,” he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station Mohammad Atikur Rahman Majumder said rescue operations had been conducted at the resort. The cause of the fire could not immediately be confirmed, and identifying the victims was taking time.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abul Mannan said six people had died and six others had been injured at the time of his statement. The injured were receiving treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
The district administration formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident. A further death was confirmed after the deputy commissioner’s statement.
