The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s largest mangrove forests has been submerged due to rising water levels in the Mongla and Pashur rivers in Bagerhat.
Since Friday morning, a tidal surge caused by the full moon, heavy rainfall, and rough seas has led to water levels rising four feet above the danger mark.
Kumar Swastik, a sub-divisional engineer with the Bagerhat District Water Development Board, told the media that low-lying coastal areas around Mongla are flooded.
Despite the submersion, the forest department is not concerned about wildlife loss, as many animals can seek refuge on elevated mud banks within the forest.
