Residents held torch processions in several areas of Teknaf on Friday evening to protest the killing of Army soldier Md Titas Sheikh during an operation against a human trafficking gang in the hill areas of the upazila.

The demonstrations were held in Teknaf Sadar, Hwaikong, Hnila and Baharchhara, among other areas.

The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the killing, strong action against human traffickers and criminals operating in the hills, and measures to free the hills from criminal activities.

Residents taking part in the protests said the hills of Teknaf had become hideouts for robbery and human trafficking gangs. They alleged that such groups had been operating from the hills for years and were involved in human trafficking and other crimes.

Titas Sheikh was killed on Thursday when Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police personnel conducted a joint operation against human trafficking gangs in the hills.

Addressing a protest rally, Teknaf upazila BNP president Advocate Hasan Siddiqui said Titas Sheikh had been serving in the area to ensure the safety and security of local residents.

He expressed condolences to the soldier’s family and said there should be no compromise with human traffickers and drug traders.

“The time has come to decide whether criminals will remain in Teknaf or ordinary people will live in peace,” he said, urging residents to stand beside the Army, BGB, police and other law enforcement agencies working to ensure their security.

He also prayed for the salvation of the deceased soldier’s soul.
