Maheshkhali, the only hilly island in Bangladesh, is hosting a two-day book fair titled Maheshkhali Boi Mela. The event commenced on Wednesday (February 26) at Aguner Poroshmoni Chattar, Dighirpar, with Moheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Hedayet Ullah inaugurating the fair.

Following the inauguration, a discussion session was held at the Old Upazila Conference Hall, where UNO Hedayet Ullah emphasized the rich history and heritage of Maheshkhali. “Despite its historical and cultural significance, Moheshkhali’s heritage has not been adequately preserved. Conservation efforts are crucial,” he remarked. He further highlighted the alarming decline in the island’s role as a breeding ground for intellectuals and expressed concerns over the destruction of biodiversity, which is impacting local communities. “We can restore Maheshkhali to its former glory, but it requires widespread public awareness,” he added.

Speaking about the book fair, he noted, “This year’s fair is a symbolic event, organized on a small scale. From next year onwards, we plan to expand it, featuring renowned publishers and interactive sessions with poets and writers.”

Md. Belal Hossain, President of the Book Fair Management Committee, presided over the event. Among the speakers were Moheshkhali Assistant Commissioner (Land) Dipak Tripura, poet and translator Ruhul Qader Babul, essayist Professor Mohammad Shah Alam, and poet, essayist, and educator Jahir Siddiqui.

M. Enamul Haque, Member Secretary of the Book Fair Management Committee, shared the event’s objective: “Today’s youth are increasingly drawn to mobile screens. This initiative aims to encourage reading habits and uphold the spirit of Amar Ekushey.”

The book fair features 10 stalls, showcasing a variety of publications. In addition to book exhibitions and sales, the event includes discussion sessions, poetry recitations, and vibrant cultural performances.
