A month-long under-14 swimming training program has commenced in Cox’s Bazar, offering free instruction to 40 school-going youth, aiming to build water safety awareness and athletic potential.
The program, launched on Tuesday (April 29), is organized by the Cox’s Bazar District Administration and District Sports Office, with support from Cox’s Bazar Swimming School and the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation’s Hotel Shaibal.
District Sports Officer Md. Alauddin stated, “This month-long initiative is part of the 2024–2025 Annual Sports Program by the Directorate of Sports. As a riverine country, Bangladesh frequently sees tragic incidents due to the inability to swim. To prevent such losses, 40 children in each of the 64 districts will be trained.”
He added that children who learn swimming systematically may become top-tier swimmers and valuable national assets.
Riazul Kabir, Director of Cox’s Bazar Swimming School, noted, “We invited participants from various schools. The Sports Ministry’s goal is to identify talent from the 40 trainees and promote the best to the divisional level and eventually to national and international platforms.” He also emphasized that widespread training programs, like those in Japan and China, could help significantly reduce drowning incidents.
The initiative represents a step toward youth sports development and a safer, more resilient community.
