Violence against women and drug trafficking have increased in the Rohingya camps, posing a growing threat to the country’s overall security, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday.
The government is giving the Rohingya crisis the highest priority from a national security perspective, he said.
The minister made the remarks at a seminar on the Rohingya crisis at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies auditorium in Dhaka.
“The longer it takes to resolve the Rohingya crisis, the more complicated the situation will become,” he said.
Both the local population and the Rohingya would suffer if the crisis continued, he said, calling on the international community to play an effective role in restoring stability in Rakhine.
There is no alternative to a political solution to ensure the safe repatriation of the Rohingya to their homeland, Salahuddin said.
He emphasized the urgent need for a swift resolution as the security and humanitarian crises continue to worsen.
The minister said humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya should continue, but it should not become a long-term arrangement.
“Alongside managing the crisis temporarily, we must find a way towards a permanent solution,” he said.
