The Women, Peace, and Security Steering Committee held its inaugural meeting in Ukhiya to combat drug issues in this border subdistrict. Formed as part of a localized effort to implement the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security, the committee’s core mission aligns with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, promoting peacebuilding through women’s involvement.
On Wednesday, November 13, Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha (BNPS), with support from the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders, hosted this meeting at a training center in Ukhiya Sadar under the project “Empowering Bangladeshi Women for Sustainable Peace.”
Presided over by Shaheen Akhter, a former Upazila Vice Chairman (Reserved), the meeting included discussions by various stakeholders from educational institutions, development sectors, and other professionals.
The committee members discussed critical topics, including ensuring women’s participation in drug prevention activities at the subdistrict level, the impact of conflict and violence on women and girls, and the importance of women’s involvement in peacebuilding efforts.
