Interim Government Chief Adviser Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has pledged to work with the United Nations to make every effort so that Rohingya refugees can celebrate next year’s Eid in their homeland, Rakhine, Myanmar.
Speaking at Mega Iftar, Ramadan Solidarity Iftar, with 100,000 Rohingya refugees in Camp-20 Extension, Ukhiya, on Wednesday (March 14), Dr. Yunus made this commitment in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Yunus addressed them in the Chattogram dialect to strengthen communication with the Rohingya.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Guterres assured that the UN would do everything possible to secure the necessary funds for the Rohingya crisis.
“I promise we will do everything to prevent a funding crisis. I will speak to governments worldwide to ensure adequate financial support,” Guterres said during his visit to the Balukhali Rohingya camp.
He emphasized that the international community must not forget the Rohingya and stressed the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance to ensure a dignified life for them.
“The Rohingya want to return home. It is crucial for the international community to continue efforts for peace in Myanmar and to secure the rights of the Rohingya,” Guterres added.
During his visit, Guterres also toured various facilities in Balukhali Camp, including the Rohingya Cultural Memory Center, managed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
