A total of 144,456 newly arrived registered Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh between December 2024 and February 28 this year, according to the UNHCR.
The figure is 1,129 higher than that recorded in January, when the number of newly arrived Rohingyas stood at 143,327, indicating a continued influx within a single month.
The information was revealed in a monthly report released by UNHCR on Monday (March 16). The report also said that a total of 1,184,864 Rohingya have been identified across the refugee camps in Bangladesh.
According to UNHCR, targeted violence and persecution in Rakhine State in Myanmar since 2024 have forced thousands of people to flee, prompting many Rohingyas to seek safety in Bangladesh.
As of February 28, the UN agency has registered 1,040,408 Rohingya who were displaced from Myanmar between 1990 and 2017. Among them, 39,502 arrived after 1990, while 1,000,906 came following the mass exodus in 2017.
The report noted that due to escalating conflict in Rakhine State, new refugees have continued to enter Bangladesh since 2024. A fresh wave of arrivals was observed towards the end of last year, and biometric identification of the new arrivals is currently underway.
Among the Rohingya population, 78 percent are women and children. Around 12 percent fall into vulnerable categories, including persons with disabilities, single parents, individuals with serious medical conditions, unaccompanied minors, and elderly people at risk, all of whom require legal and physical protection.
