Cox’s Bazar has been experiencing heavy rainfall for more than a week now. According to the local meteorological office, 165 millimeters of rain were recorded in the 24 hours leading up to 9 a.m. on Monday (June 2).
Abdul Hannan, Assistant Meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, confirmed the figures.
A special heavy rainfall alert from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned that due to the active southwest monsoon, parts of the Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience heavy (44–88 mm per 24 hours) to very heavy (188 mm per 24 hours) rainfall.
“Due to very heavy rainfall, there is a risk of landslides in the hilly areas of Sylhet, Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar districts,” the bulletin stated. “Additionally, heavy downpours may cause temporary waterlogging in some parts of Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas,” it added.
