Proposals for 24 mega development projects aimed at improving the quality of life of people in the Cox’s Bazar-2 (Moheshkhali-Kutubdia) constituency, modernising the island areas and bringing about major changes to their overall infrastructure have been formally submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid, member of parliament from Moheshkhali-Kutubdia, recently handed over the proposals at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister A B M Abdus Sattar formally received the project proposals from him.

While receiving the proposals, the chief secretary told MP Alamgir Farid that, in line with the Prime Minister’s special directives, steps would be taken to make visible progress on and implement the long-standing and legitimate demands of the people of Moheshkhali and Kutubdia as soon as possible.

The proposed projects include the long-awaited Moheshkhali-Cox’s Bazar connecting bridge, which has been given particular importance. Other proposals include constructing a sustainable main embankment to protect Kutubdia island, as well as several public-interest projects in communication, education, health, and infrastructure.

Economists and local stakeholders said implementing the proposed mega projects could usher in a new era for the economy, tourism, and communication systems of Moheshkhali and Kutubdia.

According to the press release, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, during his visit to Matarbari in Moheshkhali on August 9, instructed local MP Alamgir Farid to submit specific proposals for development projects based on the needs of people on the two islands.

Following the prime minister’s directive, MP Farid prepared and submitted proposals for the 24 projects within a short time, it said.

People from different sections of the coastal communities have welcomed what the press release described as the prime minister’s far-reaching, public-oriented initiative to develop Moheshkhali and Kutubdia.
