Rain has been lashing Cox’s Bazar since Monday morning under the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, with the intensity increasing in the afternoon and turning into heavy showers by evening, leaving several parts of the town waterlogged.
Intermittent rain began in the morning, but intensified after noon. As evening approached, heavy rain inundated low-lying areas and several roads, disrupting traffic and causing suffering for commuters and pedestrians.
People returning home from work were caught in the rain, with many seen making their way through waterlogged streets. Vehicle movement also slowed, leading to traffic congestion in several areas and adding to the difficulties commuters faced.
Jasim, a pedestrian caught in the rain, said the showers had made movement difficult, particularly where water had accumulated on the roads.
Another resident, Lokman, said several roads in the town become waterlogged during heavy rain.
“Many places have been waterlogged after the heavy rain this evening. This is causing considerable inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians,” he said.
Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office assistant meteorologist Abdul Hannan said gusty winds may sweep over the seaports, the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh under the influence of the low-pressure system.
The Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been advised to keep hoisting the No. 3 local warning signal, he said.
