An unexpected spell of rainfall has brought a monsoon-like feel to Cox’s Bazar at the very start of summer. Since dawn on Saturday (April 19), continuous showers have drenched the popular coastal city, offering much-needed respite from the recent scorching heat.

Locals say the downpour began early in the morning and showed no signs of stopping throughout the day. While the rain has cooled the sweltering temperatures and comforted residents, it has also caused waterlogging and widespread inconvenience in several parts of the city.

Overflowing drains and clogged canals have led to stagnant road water, which has caused garbage and waste to float onto the streets. Commuters, locals, and tourists have difficulty navigating knee-deep water in many areas.

Even rickshaw travel and walking along main roads and suburban neighborhoods have become challenging. Many residents blame poor maintenance of the city’s drainage system, saying the authorities failed to make necessary repairs ahead of the rainy season.

According to the local Met Office, the rain is caused by a low-pressure system and may continue.
