Cox’s Bazar, known widely for its stunning beaches, is quietly making a name in agriculture, particularly for its thriving betel leaf and areca nut (supari) cultivation. Across the district’s upazilas, unions, and villages, vibrant betel leaf farms are becoming an increasingly common sight.

In places like Goalia village, betel farming has become a stable agricultural practice. Local farmers say the crop offers consistent demand throughout the year and yields a high profit margin, making it a more attractive option than many other crops.

“A good return and steady market price make betel leaf farming more profitable than others,” said one farmer. “Although prices have dropped slightly recently, it’s still worthwhile.”

Cox’s Bazar holds strong potential for betel cultivation with fertile soil, a favorable climate, and relatively easy maintenance.

Experts believe that with minimal government oversight and some technological support, betel leaf could emerge as one of the region’s key cash crops.
