A deep depression and intense convective clouds have unleashed heavy downpours and strong winds across Cox’s Bazar, plunging all nine upazilas into darkness for more than 24 hours.

The power outages began on Wednesday afternoon (28 May), gradually affecting each upazila.

According to the Cox’s Bazar Palli Bidyut Samiti, only about 20 percent of power supply has been restored in the affected areas so far, leaving 80 percent of the region still without electricity.

Makbul Alam, General Manager of Cox’s Bazar Palli Bidyut Samiti, said that the heavy rainfall caused the outages. “Once the rainfall subsides, power will be restored in all upazilas. But if the heavy rain continues, residents may face further outages. Our teams are working tirelessly to resolve the issue,” he added.

Meanwhile, Abdul Kader Gani, Executive Engineer of the Cox’s Bazar Power Distribution Department, stated that the situation remains challenging due to the storm and rain. “However, we have managed to restore all feeders in the Cox’s Bazar Sadar area as the rain has slightly decreased. There are still some complaints from residents, which we are working to resolve.”

According to the Meteorological Department, Cox’s Bazar recorded 152 millimeters of rainfall over the past 24 hours, and further rain is forecast for the next two days.
