The famously misti paan (sweet betel leaf) of Moheshkhali is now being cultivated in the Jhilongja Union of Ukhiya, expanding beyond its traditional roots. Once exclusive to Moheshkhali, this unique variety of betel leaf is gaining popularity nationwide. According to betel leaf grower Anwar Sowdagar, the demand for Moheshkhali’s sweet betel leaf is steadily rising nationwide, particularly among tourists visiting Cox’s Bazar. Recognizing this growing interest, farmers in Jhilongja and other upazilas have now begun cultivating this prized variety, bringing its distinctive flavour to new regions.
