To enhance passenger safety and curb the smuggling of illegal goods, authorities have introduced modern luggage scanning for the first time at the iconic Cox’s Bazar railway station. Similar high-tech scanners — manufactured in the United States — have also been installed at Dhaka and Chattogram railway stations.
The initiative comes as part of a broader effort to tighten security on railway routes, especially following the launch of direct train services to Cox’s Bazar — a route that has seen a surge in passenger traffic and concerns over drug and contraband smuggling.
Authorities hope that this added layer of security will act as a deterrent against the unlawful transportation of drugs and other prohibited items via train routes.
While air travelers in Bangladesh have long become accustomed to luggage scans at sensitive airport zones, many domestic railway passengers are experiencing this for the first time. The move has been widely welcomed by travelers, who see it as a step toward safer and more secure journeys.
With this development, the Bangladesh Railway establishes a new precedent by enhancing security standards across major train routes in the country.
