The wholesale betel leaf market in the Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar is buzzing with activity. The photo shows traders busy sorting and supplying fresh green betel leaves, neatly arranged in large bamboo baskets.
From early morning, growers and wholesalers from different parts of Ukhiya gather at the market to sell their produce.
Traders said that betel leaves are currently being sold at prices ranging from Tk 250 to Tk 300 per bira (bundle), depending on the quality and size of the leaves.
Premium-quality leaves are fetching higher prices, while average-grade betel leaves are selling at comparatively lower rates.
Betel growers noted that favourable weather conditions have resulted in a good harvest this season, ensuring an adequate supply in the market.
However, many said that rising labour wages and transportation costs have reduced their expected profits.
With steady demand for betel leaves for weddings, social events, and daily consumption, Ukhiya’s wholesale betel leaf market continues to play an essential role in supporting the local economy.
