The demand for sunflowers has increased noticeably at flower shops across Cox’s Bazar this winter, with steady crowds seen at outlets in different parts of the town, particularly around the Shaheed Minar area. Shops such as Abdur Rahim Pushpa Bitan and several nearby flower stalls have been drawing a constant flow of customers.
Temporary flower traders and shop owners said that on busy weekdays, customers have been arriving in unexpectedly large numbers from morning until evening.
Vendors in the town’s central and public areas reported brisk sales within a short time.
Samiya, a customer, said that sunflowers have a unique charm and visual appeal. ‘While passing by the Shaheed Minar area, the flowers caught my eye, and I stopped. The prices are relatively affordable, so I bought a few to decorate my home,’ she said, adding that she would like to see more such flowers available in Cox’s Bazar.
Traders said customers are particularly interested in sunflower stems and bouquets for decorative and gift purposes. The price of a single sunflower usually ranges between Tk 30 and Tk 80, depending on quality and timing, while specially designed bouquets are sold for between Tk 200 and Tk 400.
Flower sellers also noted that sunflowers have become popular this season for occasions, gifting, and home decoration. Traders cited experiences in other parts of the country, noting that direct retail sales often yield better prices and stronger demand, which encourages flower businesses.
In this context, they expressed optimism that the flower trade in Cox’s Bazar has gained some momentum during the winter season.
