Around 130 maunds of marine fish were caught in a single haul using a seine net in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The catch included a variety of small and large species such as poa, faisya, mola, ribbonfish, bata, pomfret, and hilsa, fetching approximately Tk 1o lakh in sales. News of the rare haul drew curious crowds to the beach on Saturday afternoon.

The fish were caught around noon on Saturday (14 February) in the Godarbil area of Teknaf Sadar Union, in nets owned by fisherman Rafique Alam Munna.

According to sources, about 30 fishermen set out to sea around 8:00 am with a seine net. After nearly five hours, at around 1:00 pm, they began pulling in the net and found it teeming with fish. Additional laborers had to be called in to manage the heavy load. When the fish were brought ashore onto the sandy beach, the atmosphere turned festive.

Munna said such a large catch in a single haul is uncommon. “As soon as we began pulling the net, we saw it filling up with different species of small and large fish. I am grateful to Almighty Allah,” he said. The fish were later sold to local traders for Tk 1 million following negotiations.

Local fish trader Nur Mohammad said smaller fish were priced between Tk 150 and Tk 200 per kilogram. He purchased most of the poa and ribbonfish. The fish have been preserved in drums packed with ice.

He explained that about 2.5 kilograms of fresh ribbonfish yields just over one kilogram of dried fish, which can be sold for Tk 900 to Tk 1,000 per kilogram. A portion of the remaining catch will be sent to wholesale markets in Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, and Dhaka, he added.
