The Moheshkhali Jetty in Cox’s Bazar has emerged as one of the busiest river terminals along the coast, serving as the primary maritime link between the mainland and Moheshkhali, the country’s only hilly island upazila.

Every day, thousands of people use the jetty for commuting, trade, education, and medical needs. From the first light of dawn, streams of passengers begin to gather at the terminal, and the flow continues until late into the night.

In addition to workers, students, and traders, a growing number of tourists are travelling through the jetty on their way to Moheshkhali.

The island’s key attractions include the historic Adinath Temple, vast salt fields, serene beaches, and its distinctive hilly landscape. For many visitors from home and abroad, the Maheshkhali Jetty serves as the first gateway to these scenic destinations.

Sea-trucks, speedboats, and country boats operate regularly from the jetty, maintaining steady connections between Cox’s Bazar and surrounding points. Vessels depart and return throughout the day in response to passenger demand.

Tanbirul Miraj Ripon, a local resident and journalist working with an international media outlet, said that with the steady rise in passenger and tourist numbers, the jetty requires further infrastructural development and strengthened safety measures.

Observers said that with coordinated initiatives from the authorities to modernise facilities and ensure orderly management, the strategically important terminal could further develop into one of the country’s prominent tourism gateways.
