Several sampans are lined up on the Darianagar beach and prepare to venture into the deep sea as the peak season for fishing goes on.

Delwar Hossain, a sailor of a such sampan, said that they formed a team of 6 fishermen and they would go to the sea with this sampan to catch various types of fish including hilsa and rupachanda.

As the peak season of fishing lasts 3 months of a year, they expect a bountiful catch this time.

He explained that the structure and construction style of Sampan is different from other boats. The curved moon-like front of the sampan can cut through the waves and the duck-like back side is somewhat straightforward.

There are two types of sampans in Cox’s Bazar; smaller in size and larger in size, where the first one is being used to catch fish around the near coast and the later one to navigate into the deep sea.

Fishing sampans are about 27 feet in length and up to 9 feet in width.
