Leaders and activists of the BNP in Matamuhuri expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed after Matamuhuri was declared a full-fledged upazila following long-standing public demand.

A press conference and celebratory procession were organised on Sunday afternoon at the temporary office of the Matamuhuri upazila BNP in Badarkhali under the leadership of the upazila BNP and its associate bodies.

A large number of party leaders, activists, and local residents took part in the programme.

Among those present were Cox’s Bazar district BNP organisational secretary and Matamuhuri upazila BNP president Jamil Ibrahim Chowdhury, district BNP office secretary and senior vice-president of the upazila BNP Yusuf Badri, and general secretary Hefazutur Rahman Chowdhury, along with leaders from BNP and its associate organisations from seven unions.

Speaking at the press conference, Jamil Ibrahim Chowdhury said the government’s decision to approve Matamuhuri as a full-fledged upazila had fulfilled a long-cherished demand of people living in the coastal region.

He said the new administrative unit would help bring education, healthcare, agriculture and other government services closer to the people.

He also emphasised the importance of transforming Matamuhuri into a modern, effective, and strong administrative structure.

According to him, Matamuhuri is a fully coastal region with social, cultural and geographical realities that are different from many other parts of the country.

He urged authorities to ensure that administrative activities are organised in a more effective and coordinated way considering the specific needs of the coastal population.

Replying to journalists’ questions about the location of the upazila headquarters, Yusuf Badri said the matter would be decided by national leaders and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

“He has long carried the vision of establishing this upazila and played a key role in making it a reality. We believe he will determine the most suitable location considering the convenience of people from all seven unions,” he said.

After the press conference, the celebratory procession marched through the main roads of Badarkhali.

The area echoed with slogans expressing gratitude to the government for approving the new upazila.

Local residents expressed hope that the formation of the new upazila would accelerate the provision of civic facilities, infrastructure development, and administrative services in the long-neglected coastal region.
