The Cox’s Bazar municipality has launched an extensive cleanup campaign to remove sacrificial animal waste quickly during Eid-ul-Azha, deploying more than 300 sanitation workers across the town.
From narrow alleys to major roads, municipal workers were seen carrying out cleaning activities throughout the day under the direct supervision of conservancy inspector Kabir Hossain.
Soon after Eid prayers ended on Thursday morning, residents in different neighbourhoods and roads of Cox’s Bazar began sacrificing animals.
At the same time, municipal cleaning teams started waste removal operations across the town.
Municipal sources reported that sanitation workers had been on standby since early morning to facilitate the swift removal of sacrificial waste.
The operation also engaged extra manpower from other municipal departments, in addition to regular staff.
Kabir Hossain said that workers were first collecting waste from residential lanes and neighbourhoods before transporting it by van to main roads.
The waste was then being loaded onto dump trucks and heavy vehicles for disposal at designated dumping sites.
He added that workers equipped with dump trucks, water tankers, compactors and handcarts had been collecting waste in different areas since morning.
Water and bleaching powder were also sprayed at sacrificial sites to control odour and prevent the spread of germs.
The municipality aims to remove all sacrificial waste and clean the entire town by 10:00 pm, he said.
Municipal officials further said that preparations had been taken to remove nearly 170 tonnes of sacrificial waste this year.
