A three-day traditional Boli Khela (wrestling competition) and Boishakhi Fair 2026 began on Friday for the first time in the Sonar Para area of Jaliapalong union in Ukhiya Upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The three-day programme, organised by the youth community of Sonar Para and the Boishakhi Fair Management Committee, will continue until June 1.

The event was formally inaugurated at a field adjacent to Reju Khal Bridge, drawing a large crowd of residents, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts.

Local dignitaries, elected representatives, and social workers attended the opening ceremony.

Speakers highlighted the importance of preserving rural traditions, cultural heritage, and indigenous sports by introducing them to younger generations.

The much-anticipated wrestling competition began immediately after the inauguration.

Wrestlers from across the Chattogram division showcased their strength, skill, and technique, captivating spectators throughout the day.

The competition attracted enthusiastic crowds, with each bout drawing loud cheers.

Participants demonstrated fierce determination as they competed for victory in the traditional sport.

Alongside the wrestling event, the Boishakhi fair featured stalls selling local products, handicrafts, toys, and a variety of traditional foods.

The fairground remained vibrant with visitors of all ages, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the day.

Saiful Islam, a young visitor, said that although he had heard about traditional wrestling competitions since childhood, it was the first time he had the opportunity to watch one in his locality.

“I really enjoyed the matches.” The fair has also created a lively and enjoyable atmosphere,’ he said.

Organisers said that both the wrestling competition and the fair would continue over the next two days, with more attractions and activities.

They sought the cooperation of all concerned to ensure the successful completion of the event.
