United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday for a three-day visit to discuss bilateral ties and regional strategic issues, with a visit to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar also on his itinerary.
During his visit, the senior US official is expected to assess Bangladesh’s evolving foreign policy, including its relations with China, and review Dhaka’s approach to implementing the recently signed trade agreement with Washington, media reported citing diplomatic sources.
Gor is scheduled to hold talks with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on Thursday evening. He is also expected to meet Chief Adviser Tareq Rahman and exchange views with leaders of political parties, professionals and representatives of civil society.
Discussions are expected to focus on Bangladesh’s foreign policy priorities, its strategic position in the region and the future of Dhaka-Washington relations.
On the final day of his visit, Friday, Gor is expected to travel to Cox’s Bazar to assess the humanitarian situation of Rohingya refugees and visit refugee camps in the district.
Gor is the third senior US official to visit Bangladesh from Washington since the BNP-led government assumed office in February. Earlier, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur visited Dhaka in March, followed by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch in May.
Gor assumed his current role in January this year, with New Delhi serving as his regional base. In addition to India, he is responsible for advancing US strategic engagement with Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and other South Asian countries.
