The fish market at the fishing village adjacent to Inani Beach in Cox’s Bazar has become increasingly busy as fishermen return from the deep sea with their catches.
From early morning, fish traders gather at the landing site to negotiate prices and purchase fish directly from fishermen before supplying them to markets across the district and beyond.
A visit to the fishing village recently showed fishermen returning to shore with their catch, unloading fish from boats and disentangling them from fishing nets. At the same time, traders prepared to transport the fish to wholesale and retail markets.
Fishermen said that Chamila fish is currently selling at Tk 6,000 per maund, up from Tk 5,400 per maund a week ago, marking an increase of around Tk 600 within seven days.
They attributed the price rise to lower-than-expected catches in the deep sea over the past several days, which has reduced overall supply.
Fish trader Kabir Hossain said that traders were having to pay higher prices to purchase fish from fishermen because of the lower catch.
“The increased procurement cost is also affecting the retail market, forcing us to sell fish to consumers at comparatively higher prices,” he said.
The vibrant fish market at Inani fishing village plays a significant role in the local economy. Every day, large quantities of marine fish are transported from the landing centre to markets across Cox’s Bazar and other parts of the country.
