A direct and uninterrupted railway connection from Panchagarh to Cox’s Bazar would increase the movement of freight and container trains in the country tenfold, according to Bangladesh Railway chief planning officer Md Rafiqul Islam.

He said the project would directly integrate Bangladesh Railway’s eastern and western zones, making it easier to transport passengers and goods directly from the northern region to the south.

According to sources at the Ministry of Railways and the planning department, the new railway link would connect Bangladesh with the Trans-Asian Railway Network, playing an important role in expanding regional trade.

The direct rail connection between Panchagarh and Cox’s Bazar is also expected to boost the country’s tourism sector. Tourists would be able to travel on a single route to experience the hilly landscapes of the north and the sea beach in the south.

Officials concerned believe the connection could increase tourist arrivals and significantly raise government revenue from tourism.

Freight transportation would be another major benefit of the railway link. Agricultural products produced in the northwestern region could be transported quickly and at lower costs to different parts of the country.

Similarly, salt, dried fish and other products produced in the southern region could be transported directly to the northern region and elsewhere. This would reduce transportation costs for farmers and traders while enabling faster delivery of products to markets.

Bangladesh Railway Additional Director General (Rolling Stock) Fakir Md Mahiuddin said the project was one of the most important in the railway’s history.

“Through implementation of the project, the two zones of Bangladesh Railway will be integrated. Engines, coaches and other necessary rolling stock are also being procured to operate direct trains between the two ends,” he said.

Additional Director General (Operations) Md Nazmul Islam said the entire railway route was being developed under a unified plan.

“As a result, the number of trains will increase. At the same time, passenger services and safety will be ensured, while railway revenue will also increase,” he said.

Bangladesh Railway Director General Engineer Md Afzal Hossain said operating uninterrupted, high-speed trains along the entire route from Panchagarh through Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar was a timely demand.

He said the project had received the government’s highest priority, placing a significant responsibility on Bangladesh Railway.

“If the project is implemented within the stipulated timeframe, it will be possible to operate high-speed trains quickly from one end of the country to the other,” he said.
