A Cox’s Bazar court on Monday granted a three-day remand for six Chinese nationals arrested in a cybercrime case filed in the district.
Senior Judicial Magistrate SM Gias Uddin passed the order after a hearing at his court in the afternoon.
Earlier, CID Inspector and investigation officer Abul Kalam sought five-day remand for the six accused. After hearing the arguments, the court granted three days’ remand.
Public prosecutor Shawkat Osman said investigators had sought the remand to examine the accused’s alleged involvement in the offence in greater detail and to analyse the devices seized from them.
Defence lawyer Advocate Abdul Mannan said it was important to establish whether a cybercrime had actually been committed. He also said that if the six had come to Bangladesh for tourism or other legitimate purposes, they should have the opportunity to be released through legal procedures.
He said otherwise the case could potentially affect the country’s image.
The six foreign nationals were produced before the court at around 9:00am on Monday and were later sent to jail following the court’s order.
Police arrested them from a hotel in Cox’s Bazar on September 9 and filed a case with Ramu Police Station over alleged cybercrime. The Criminal Investigation Department later took charge of the investigation.
