Dried ‘churi fish’, or dried sea-caught knife fish, is proving popular among both locals and tourists in Cox’s Bazar, with many tourists buying it to take home after visiting the district.
At dried-fish shops in the Bazarghata area, dried knife fish is sold alongside various other types of dried seafood.
Sellers said demand from tourists has helped keep the product in regular supply.
Seller Helal Uddin said demand for knife fish dried fish is relatively high among tourists.
“Many buy it not only for themselves but also to take home for family members and relatives,” he said.
The price ranges from around Tk900 to Tk2,500 per kilogram, depending on the quality and size, according to sellers. Larger and better-quality dried fish generally cost more.
Sellers said the dried fish can be used to prepare various dishes, including bhorta, and its distinctive taste has made it popular among both local consumers and tourists.
Cox’s Bazar’s traditional dried fish products are increasingly becoming popular purchases for tourists, adding another dimension to the district’s local food culture.
