Border Guard Bangladesh personnel seized 149,800 yaba tablets from an abandoned consignment during an operation in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Wednesday night.
A special patrol team from the Hnila Border Outpost under Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB) made the seizure at Anwar Project, a border area, around 11:40 pm on September 23.
According to BGB, the patrol team, acting on intelligence, spotted four suspected smugglers carrying sacks as they entered Bangladesh from Myanmar around 11:40 pm.
When the patrol team challenged them, the suspected smugglers allegedly opened fire while fleeing. BGB personnel also fired back, bringing the situation under control. No casualties were reported.
The patrol team later searched the area and recovered three sacks containing around 15 packets of blue airtight packaging, holding 149,800 yaba tablets.
BGB said it found no other illegal items despite a further search of the area.
Ukhiya Battalion commander Lt Col Md Zahirul Islam said intelligence surveillance had been strengthened to identify those involved in supplying and smuggling the drugs and bring them to justice.
BGB said it would continue operations against drug trafficking and smuggling along the border.
