The Cox’s Bazar district round of the National University Inter-College Sports Competition 2026 was held at Cox’s Bazar Government College on Thursday as part of the government’s ‘Learning with Happiness’ program.
National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah inaugurated the day-long competition at the college ground in the morning.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Treasurer Professor Dr Md Nazmul Hossain were present as special guests.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the vice-chancellor said classroom teaching alone was not enough to develop students as well-rounded individuals.
“Alongside their studies, students need opportunities to participate in sports, cultural activities and other co-curricular activities,” he said.
He said sports helped students remain physically fit while developing discipline, punctuality, leadership, cooperation and a positive competitive attitude.
The vice-chancellor said the ‘Learning with Happiness’ program aimed to create a lively and enjoyable learning environment where students could develop their talents and creativity alongside their academic studies.
He said the National University wanted to go beyond academic activities to help its students become healthy, confident and responsible citizens.
Referring to the role of sports, Dr Amanullah said the playing field taught students not only to compete but also to accept victory and defeat positively. He said respecting opponents, following rules, and working as a team were also important lessons that could benefit students in their future personal and professional lives.
He congratulated the participating students from different colleges in Cox’s Bazar and said such events would strengthen communication and friendship among students while creating a healthy competitive environment among colleges.
A total of 11 events were held during the day, with around 100 students from nine colleges in Cox’s Bazar taking part. Winners of the district-level competition will have the opportunity to compete at the divisional level.
After inaugurating the competition, the vice-chancellor visited the science laboratory of Cox’s Bazar Government College and gave instructions on its modernization. He also took part in a tree-planting program on the college campus.
College principal Professor Abul Hasnat Md Mofizul Haque chaired the program. National University Director of Physical Education and Cultural Affairs Mohammad Shafiul Karim delivered the welcome address.
National University acting College Inspector Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Cox’s Bazar Government College Vice-Principal Professor Md Ahidul Islam, officials of the university, and teachers and students from different colleges were also present.
The competition created a festive atmosphere on the college campus throughout the day, with enthusiastic student participation and lively contests among the athletes.
