For Towhidul Islam, returning home after completing his higher education in China was not simply a personal decision. It was part of a long-held dream to create opportunities for people in his hometown of Cox’s Bazar.
The young entrepreneur, who grew up in South Ghonapara, Goldighirpar, Cox’s Bazar, completed his bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence in China. Although he later began his professional career at a Chinese company, he kept his focus on Bangladesh and his home district.
His experience in China, where he saw how technology, skilled human resources, and planning could drive development, inspired him to explore ways to bring Chinese technology and expertise to Bangladesh.
After completing his studies, Towhidul joined a Chinese company as a foreign affairs manager. He was later promoted to head of foreign affairs in recognition of his work and professional skills.
While working there, he explored opportunities to expand the company’s business in Bangladesh and build stronger commercial and technological links between the two countries.
His efforts led to the launch of operations in Bangladesh by Chinese solar energy company Tianjin Jinwo Energy Technology Company Ltd, commercially known as Ramon Power.
Towhidul Islam is now the managing director of Ramon Power Chittagong Ltd. The company has offices in Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar and distributes its products and services through 10 distributors nationwide.
A plan to train 100 youths
One of Towhidul’s major goals is to create employment opportunities for young people in his hometown.
The Cox’s Bazar office currently employs 13 people, and he plans to increase the number to 100 within the next one to one-and-a-half years.
He also plans to arrange training for local youths with the support of Chinese technicians. Through the training, he wants to develop a pool of skilled workers and eventually help some of them become entrepreneurs.
For Towhidul, however, employment generation is only one part of his broader vision.
He wants to expand access to solar power in remote areas of Cox’s Bazar within the next two years. He is also working towards bringing the entire Chattogram division under solar energy coverage within five years.
He said electricity access remains limited in some remote parts of Cox’s Bazar and that solar power could help improve living conditions in those communities.
“This is not just a business for me; it is a social responsibility. No household should be without electricity. Just as sunlight is limitless, so is human potential,” Towhidul said.
Bringing technology closer to home
Towhidul said his experience in China strengthened his belief that technology and skilled human resources can create opportunities beyond major cities.
He wants young people from Cox’s Bazar to build skills and careers without leaving the country.
His plans include expanding solar technology, creating jobs for local youth, and building skilled human resources through training.
He also sees stronger business and technological ties between Bangladesh and China as an opportunity to bring new technologies and investment into the country.
Towhidul’s long-term vision is to see solar power reach remote communities across Cox’s Bazar, while creating jobs and helping local youths build careers around renewable energy.
For the young entrepreneur, the goal is ultimately to ensure that no village remains without access to electricity and that young people in his hometown have opportunities to build their future at home.
