Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 61,600 yaba tablets and arrested two people in separate anti-drug operations in Cox’s Bazar, officials said.

In the first operation, a BGB patrol team searched a CNG-run three-wheeler travelling from Sonapara Bazar towards Cox’s Bazar at Rejukhal checkpost around 5:30 pm on Friday.

The team arrested two Rohingya women, Anwara Begum, 40, and Sabikun Nahar, 22, after recovering 1,600 yaba tablets allegedly concealed on their bodies. A smartphone used in drug trafficking was also seized.

Anwara is a resident of Camp 6, Block A, while Sabikun lives in Camp 5, Block B.

In a separate operation around 10:30 pm the same day, a patrol team from Ghumdhum Border Outpost conducted a raid at Nayapara, about 100 yards inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar 31, acting on intelligence.

The team recovered 60,000 yaba tablets abandoned at the site. No one was arrested in the second operation.

The total estimated seizure value was Tk1.85 crore, according to BGB.

Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), confirmed the seizures.

He said BGB remained committed not only to guarding the border but also to preventing drug trafficking and smuggling, adding that such operations would continue.

The two arrested women were handed over to police with the seized drugs and other items for legal action. Police are preparing a general diary, and further action is underway regarding the abandoned yaba tablets.
