Police detained Mohammad Sumon, manager of Tuptup Resto and Resort in Patwartek, Inani, Ukhiya, following a devastating fire that killed 10 tourists on Saturday.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Majumder confirmed the detention at around 4:30pm. He said police were holding Sumon at the station for questioning and would provide further details later.

The fire broke out at around 7:00am at the three-story wooden resort near Marine Drive. The flames spread rapidly through the building, killing 10 people and injuring six others. The injured were taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Syed Morshed Hossain, deputy assistant director of the Cox’s Bazar Fire Service, said rescuers had been unable to search every room during the initial operation. Further searches were therefore necessary to establish the full extent of the casualties.

The district administration formed a five-member investigation committee, headed by an additional deputy commissioner, to examine the cause of the fire and assess the resort’s safety arrangements, Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan said.

The investigation is expected to examine how the fire started and whether the resort’s safety measures were adequate.
