A visit to Cox’s Bazar Fishery Ghat reveals bustling scenes of fishermen returning from the sea with their trawlers loaded with various marine fish, including several maunds of prized Bain Fish.
Depending on the species and size, these fishes fetch between Tk20,000 and Tk40,000 per maund. According to the Cox’s Bazar Fisheries Landing Center, daily sales of marine fish range from Tk5 to Tk8 lakh, underscoring their high demand.
Local fish traders report that this season has seen a higher catch of golden eels, locally known as “Sona-Bain,” much to the fishermen’s delight. During winter, fishermen venture into deep seas equipped with large-mesh nets specifically to catch these Bain fish.
Bain Fish come in two primary varieties: the white eel, which costs Tk20,000 to Tk25,000 per maund, and the golden-hued bain, which commands a higher price of Tk40,000 per maund.
Fishermen explain that these Bains are more abundant during the winter months as they migrate to the region for breeding, making this season particularly rewarding.
