The Saint Martin’s Island Environment and Tourism Protection Development Alliance has called on the government to keep the island open to tourists until February. The appeal was prompted by the severe humanitarian crisis and significant losses faced by the local tourism industry due to current restrictions.

The demand was voiced during a press conference held on Thursday (January 23) at the Economic Reporters’ Forum auditorium in Paltan, Dhaka.

Shiblul Azam Qureshi, Chairman of the Alliance, stated, “The government’s decision to limit overnight stays and tourist access to the island is counterproductive. It has rendered countless local businesses, including hotel and resort owners, unemployed. Thousands of workers, shopkeepers, and boat owners are facing extreme hardship.”

He further emphasized, “This restriction has led to a grave humanitarian crisis, with numerous individuals dependent on the tourism sector losing their jobs. From a humanitarian perspective, we urge the government to reconsider its decision and keep the island open to tourists until February 28.”

While the restrictions have had a positive environmental impact on the island, the alliance highlighted the devastating effect on livelihoods and the local economy. The tourism-dependent workforce, including laborers, small business owners, and transport operators, is among the worst affected.

The alliance hopes that the government will swiftly withdraw the restrictions and introduce measures to balance environmental conservation with the economic needs of the local community.

Local tourism operators, business owners, and representatives from various stakeholder groups attended the press conference.
