A massive 194-kilogram Bhol fish was caught in a fishing net at Shah Porir Dwip in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The fish was ensnared in the drag net of fisherman Kalu Fakir in the Naf River early Sunday (February 16) morning near Ghola Char.
Confirming the incident, Mohammad Hasan, president of the Shah Porir Dwip Trawler Owners’ Cooperative Society, said, “Fishermen cast a drag net at the river mouth in the morning. After about an hour, they began pulling it in and found this massive fish tangled along with smaller ones. With the help of locals, they hauled it ashore and brought it to the Shah Porir Dwip jetty.”
Local boatman Nur Mohammad stated that it was the first time such a large Bhol fish was caught in their nets. The fish was initially priced at Tk3 lakh but was eventually sold to a local fish trader, Nurul Alam, for Tk2.6 lakh.
Teknaf’s Senior Fisheries Officer Delwar Hossain noted that it’s common for Bhol fish weighing 5 to 15 kg to be caught during winter. He attributed the size of this catch to strict adherence to government fishing restrictions, allowing fish populations to grow.
Meanwhile, fish trader Abdur Shukkur has started publicly announcing the sale via loudspeakers, expecting to sell it for at least 1,500 taka per kilogram.
