On Monday afternoon, Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain, the interim government’s Religious Affairs Adviser, visited the historic Rankut Bonashram Buddhist Monastery in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar.

Upon his arrival, Venerable Sri Jyotisena Mahathero, the chief abbot of the monastery, and local Buddhist leaders welcomed him with floral greetings.

During the visit, the adviser explored significant sites within the monastery, including the Rankut Padmabina Hanging Bridge and Mirakkel Garden. He also exchanged views with the monastery’s religious leaders and other stakeholders.

The monastery’s chief abbot, Sri Jyotisena Mahathero, briefed the adviser on the historical and spiritual significance of Rankut, a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site in Bangladesh.

Dr. Khalid Hossain shared a personal connection to Rankut, reminiscing about his first visit in 1983-84 while pursuing a master’s degree at Chittagong University. He recalled writing three articles on Rankut’s history for The Bangladesh Times.

Expressing his admiration for the monastery’s remarkable development over the past four decades, he pledged financial assistance for its further advancement.

In the guestbook at the pilgrimage site, Dr. Hossain penned a note acknowledging Rankut’s profound history, stating:

“Today, as part of my official tour, I had the privilege of visiting the historic Rankut Bonashram pilgrimage site. Established in 268 BCE by the mighty Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, this sacred place has been a beacon of social and spiritual activities. I am deeply impressed by the dedication of all involved, and I extend my best wishes for its continued prosperity.”

Among the key figures accompanying the adviser were Sadeq Ahmed, Personal Secretary to the Adviser, Md. Rashedul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Ramu, Sheikh Farid, Investigation Officer, Ramu Police Station, Abdul Khaleq Nizami, President, Cox’s Bazar District Imam Association, S. Mohammad Hossain, Founder General Secretary, Makkah Ramu Expatriates’ Welfare Organization, and local Buddhist leaders and government officials
