Approximately 60,000 new Rohingya refugees have recently entered Bangladesh, according to Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Speaking on the matter, he stated, “We are providing them shelter on humanitarian grounds. Additionally, there is international pressure to accommodate them. We have also urged increased support for their aid.”
The adviser made these remarks on Saturday during a press briefing at the inauguration of a new Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) battalion in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
Addressing concerns about Rohingya movement beyond the camps, he said, “They have been confined in the camps for a long time, and now they are trying to leave. Some countries have promised to take them in, but the actual number being relocated is very low. When foreign ambassadors meet with us, we raise this issue.”
Regarding border security, he highlighted Bangladesh’s diplomatic balance with both the Arakan Army and Myanmar’s military junta, saying, “Myanmar is the country, but the Arakan Army currently controls the border. The future remains uncertain. However, as of now, our border is fully secure, and there are no threats.”
