Strawberries have become a common sight in Cox’s Bazar’s fruit markets. Though only a few selected shops sell them, the growing demand for this exotic fruit in the local market has encouraged some farmers to cultivate it.

A market visit revealed that strawberries are sold at Tk1,200 per kg, while a 250-gram pack costs 250 BDT. Many customers feel that the price of strawberries is significantly higher than other fruits, making it unaffordable for many average consumers.

Strawberries have a growing demand across Bangladesh and can be cultivated throughout the country. The fruit is typically harvested between December and March, with occasional availability in April. Known for being rich in Vitamin C, strawberries are a delicacy and a nutritious choice.

The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has developed three strawberry varieties—BARI-1, BARI-2, and BARI-3—to facilitate local production. Experts say cultivating strawberries does not require a large investment, making it an attractive option for farmers looking for high-value crops.
