The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has successfully repatriated 26 Bangladeshi fishermen who the Arakan Army, an armed rebel group in Myanmar, detained. The fishermen, who had inadvertently crossed the maritime border while fishing in the Naf River, were handed over to BGB after prolonged negotiations.

Lieutenant Colonel Ashiqur Rahman, commanding officer of Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB), confirmed the rescue operation on Saturday (March 15) at 3:15 PM.

According to BGB sources, the fishermen had set out in small groups from KK Khal and Shah Porir Dwip trawler ghat in Teknaf to fish in the Bay of Bengal. However, while fishing, they accidentally crossed the maritime boundary into Myanmar’s territorial waters. Upon entry, they were apprehended by Arakan Army personnel, who accused them of illegal intrusion and seized their boats.

“As soon as we were informed, BGB initiated diplomatic efforts and engaged in direct communication with the Arakan Army to ensure their safe return. After prolonged negotiations, the fishermen were finally handed over this afternoon. Additionally, a confiscated fishing boat that had been held by the Arakan Army for a long time was also retrieved,” said Lt. Col. Ashiqur Rahman.

The rescued fishermen have since been reunited with their families.
