The traditional buffalo milk yogurt of Ilishia, a specialty of Chakaria Upazila in Cox’s Bazar, has long been cherished for its rich taste and popularity across different regions of Bangladesh.
Recently, this yogurt has made its way to Cox’s Bazar town, where vendors can be seen selling it at the Court Building premises.
One such vendor said that he brings the yogurt early in the morning from Chakaria and sells each pot for Tk 250 to Tk 300.
He further mentioned that this yogurt has been a staple at social events for generations and remains a preferred delicacy. Despite a decline in production due to various factors, its demand remains high nationwide.
In Cox’s Bazar, many residents of Purbo Boro Veola, Poshchim Boro Veola, Saharbil, Dhemushia, and Chiringa unions are engaged in buffalo farming. The region is home to around 200 to 300 small and large buffalo farms supplying the milk used in making this traditional yogurt.
Experts highlight that the buffalo milk used in Ilishia yogurt is highly nutritious, adding to its distinct quality and appeal.
