Rows of areca nut trees have become a defining feature across villages in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar. From homestead yards to roadside stretches and even open fields, these plantations are now a common sight. Beyond enhancing natural beauty, the trees play a significant role as a driving force in the local economy.
Local resident Rubel Hossain said that most families in Ukhiya are involved in areca nut cultivation in some form. While many grow the trees on a small scale around their homes, others have taken it up commercially. Seasonal sales generate notable income, providing a reliable financial support for households.
Farmer Abu Rahim said that areca nut trees require relatively low maintenance while offering good yields. Once planted, they continue to produce for many years, making the venture cost-effective and increasingly popular among farmers.
A large number of local workers are now engaged in harvesting, processing, and marketing areca nuts, creating a strong rural economic network around the sector.
In addition to economic benefits, the plantations also contribute to scenic beauty. The tall, green trees lined in rows and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze attract visitors, many of whom come to take photos and spend time close to nature.
Local observers believe that with proper planning and modern techniques, the areca nut sector in Ukhiya could expand further and contribute more significantly to the national economy.
