Non-governmental organisation ASA has organised free medical camps and distributed medicines among flood-affected people in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar to help ease the suffering of communities affected by the recent floods.
The camps were held separately from 9:00am on Wednesday in the Sonali Bazar area of Ujantia union and the Miyapara area of Pekua municipality. Flood-affected, underprivileged and vulnerable residents received medical consultations, while prescribed medicines were distributed free of charge.
The initiative, financed by ASA as part of its corporate social responsibility activities, provided healthcare services to poor, low-income and marginalised people in the area.
Among those present were ASA Pekua region senior regional manager Md Jahedur Rahman, Pekua branch manager Shipon Kumar Nath and other officials and employees of the organisation.
Jahedur Rahman said ASA had been working for the socio-economic development of underprivileged, low-income and poor people since its establishment in 1978.
‘As a completely foreign aid-independent organisation, ASA has been empowering disadvantaged communities through microcredit while also making significant contributions to education and healthcare,’ he said.
Referring to the recent floods, he said the organisation had arranged the free medical camps and medicine distribution programme with its own funds to support affected people.
‘We remain committed to continuing humanitarian assistance for underprivileged and vulnerable communities in the future,’ he added.
Shipon Kumar Nath said that, in line with a circular issued by the relevant authorities and government directives, ASA had suspended loan installment collection from flood-affected members.
He added that the organisation was also refunding savings to affected members and providing special rehabilitation loans on easy terms to help them recover from the disaster.
