Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 180,000 yaba tablets in two separate operations along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Ukhiya on Monday, October 26.
According to the 64 BGB Battalion, the first operation was conducted at around 5:00am by a special patrol team from the Jimbongkhali Border Outpost (BOP).
The patrol team spotted two people entering Bangladesh from Myanmar carrying bags near a fish enclosure owned by Selim Ahmed, beside BGB Post No. 7. When challenged, the suspected smugglers abandoned their bags, jumped into the Naf River and swam back towards Myanmar.
A search of the bags recovered approximately 100,000 yaba tablets packed in 10 airtight blue packets wrapped in khaki-coloured packaging.
In a separate operation at around 9:00am, a patrol team from the Palongkhali BOP spotted a person entering Bangladesh from Myanmar carrying a bundle near the western side of Guijja Khal.
The person fled the same way, abandoning the bundle before jumping into the Naf River and swimming toward Myanmar. The patrol team recovered approximately 80,000 yaba tablets in eight airtight blue packets wrapped in khaki-coloured packaging.
BGB personnel searched both areas but found no other illegal items. Follow-up operations in the surrounding areas were conducted to arrest the suspects, but no arrests were made.
The commanding officer of the 64 BGB Battalion said intelligence surveillance had been strengthened to identify and bring the drug suppliers and smugglers involved in the incidents to justice.
The battalion, which operates under the Ramu Sector of the Cox’s Bazar Region, said it would continue operations to maintain border security and prevent drug trafficking and other illegal activities.
