The Blue Guard Team, a youth volunteer group working to protect marine biodiversity and promote environmental awareness, has conducted a series of beach cleanup and conservation campaigns along the Sonar Para coastline in Ukhiya Upazila.
The campaign took place on July 11, 18, and 24, during which volunteers removed plastic waste, discarded fishing nets, polythene bags, and other solid waste from the beach to help preserve the coastal ecosystem.
Alongside the cleanup drives, the team organised awareness sessions for fishers, tourists, and local community members, highlighting the harmful effects of marine pollution and the importance of keeping the sea and coastline free from waste. Fishers were also encouraged to adopt environmentally friendly fishing practices to support the conservation of marine biodiversity.
Mahabub, team leader of the Sonar Para Blue Guard Team, said regular cleanup and awareness activities would strengthen public understanding of environmental protection, help conserve marine biodiversity, and contribute to safeguarding the coastal environment. He added that the 10-member volunteer team actively participates in such initiatives regularly.
The activities are being carried out under the Fisheries Livelihood Enhancement Project (FiLEP), funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and implemented by the Department of Fisheries in Cox’s Bazar.
